Nothing but maintenance projects here at the moment I have a weird noise in the Jeep, I think drivetrain, but can't tell where it's coming from and it's intermittent but reminds me of a bearing going bad. My tires are incredibly loud at the moment and it's getting really difficult to hear stuff in the Jeep and I'm not sure when it started cuz I've been driving it without doors for a long time, wearing hearing protection. That being said, I'm really thinking of tossing the AX15 and getting a TR4050 (especially if that bearing is in the transmission).
Right now I've had brake issues on my truck I use for towing (wouldn't release 1 caliper and ABS is messed up and don't see where I can buy a reasonable replacement and the e brake just doesn't seem possible to get adjusted without a lot of brake drag), which happened right after I had to replace my clutch, which happened right after I needed to replace the worn out front end and rebuild the transfer case, which locked up.
Got a tractor with locked up transmission. Got another tractor with something where the hydraulics aren't working on the 3 point lift and the brakes are basically toast. Track loader has a handful of leaks that needs address and most of the pivots are worn out and looking at fixing a pony motor on a really old D8 dozer, which would be really handy in doing a better clearing job than using a track loader on our farm.
Once I figure out the noise in the Jeep, I'm hoping to toss the EGR, install a boost gauge and start monitoring EGTs and get the R2.8 tuned and install the exhaust.
My EGR hasn't worked since 150 miles, installed a new EGR valve and no change, I think it is a ECM issue, since it won't affect power it is like having an egr delete without having to do anything. I am wanting to get a tune also and get the annoying check engine light off. My AX15 seems to be doing just fine, and I think the trick to making it live with a tune would be to not work it too hard in 5th gear.
What does your noise sound like? Can you narrow it down to a certain load or speed or gear? Have you tried running the jeep on jack stands and bring it up to speed, no tire noise that way.

I originally started hearing something in the winter and I thought it was something weird with the HVAC. It sounded loud kinda like air leaking/blowing. I hadn't heard it for awhile and then when it would pop up I was thinking I had another HVAC fan issue or something in it. During the Summer I was running no doors and between the tires and the wind I've been wearing an intercoms setup that's noise isolating, because the tires are really getting on my nerves and hadn't heard anything for months. Off road I haven't noticed the noise, but then it started happening on a fairly long drive and it was every gear (didn't try reverse) under load. It kind of sounded like it was coming from the transfer case area, but it was really hard to tell. It's a Jeep so really it could be anything from transmission to the rear axle, which I had a problem with, but the tcase and transmission have a lot of miles on them too and honestly I want to replace both of those anyway.
It's hard to recreate. I was in it the other day and the noise wasn't there. I think I'm going to have to wait until it's colder (just because I was hearing the noise first when it was really cold out) and see if I can recreate it and get it on jack stands and isolate the noise. Before that I'm going to change my diff fluid and I'm going to check for metal in the transfer case. Maybe it's the chain in the tcase? Not sure, but that's a pretty easy fix. I've just been in towing and hauling mode for a bit, so I just haven't had a lot of chances to drive the Jeep either to recreate everything.
Noises are tough second hand, I always try to rule out the easy stuff first. Check u joints on rear driveline, check rear pinion bearing, brakes for dragging. Running the wheels while on jack stands with slight pressure on e brake to simulate load. On rigs with a bolt on rear driveline, sometimes I will remove rear driveline and drive it in front wheel drive to rule out transmission. You rebuilt your rear axle, correct? Check pinion bearing preload to make sure you didn't loose tension on the crush sleeve. If you suspect transfer case, try low range and see if noise is still there or different. Since the transfercase is straight through in 2wd, it is pretty rare to have an issue unless run low on oil. I don't remember if I have ever had a NP231 apart, but some of those types of transfercases have an oil pump that is driven off of the output shaft that could be an issue if debris fills the screen. I don't know if any of this helps, but I have been working on 4x4's for over 40 years and I have seen some weird stuff. Let me know if I can help.
Thanks for the input. I haven't been able to run the Jeep in quite some time. It's likely the rear axle, because I messed up the diff preload originally. Though I thought the sound was coming from near the front, I know for certain that those bearings in the rear need to be replaced and so I may as well fix what I know is broke first.
Once I get the bearings changed, I'll run it and see if the noise goes away or not. I haven't split that Tcase so it could be full of debris, though I've changed the fluid some. When I first got the Jeep, the Tcase fluid was milky. I've always planned to change out that tcase, but it's been working fine.
I've been running around so much lately and working on other stuff, that I haven't really been thinking of the Jeep, but I'd like to get it back up and running properly.
I have been having fun with mine. I just replaced the thermostat and it helped out the running too cold issue quite a bit. I also bought a tuner box from TDI tuning and installed it the other day. I only got to drive it about 10 miles but punching the throttle in 2nd gear will plant you in the seat and put a big smile on my face! It is supposed to raise HP to 215 and torque to 369 on the highest setting which is where I put it. It has 7 levels and they claim 20% better fuel economy in level 2.
Are you able to clear codes with that tuner? I figured the torque would be higher with a tune like that. That sounds like a lot of fun and I'm wanting to do something similar.
The tuner is an in line tuner that plugs into the fuel sensor and MAP sensor. It has 7 levels and they claim 20% increase in fuel economy on level 2. Obviously I went straight to level 7, lol. Nailing the throttle in 2nd gear plants me in my seat and put a smile on my face. It doesn’t clear codes. I have been able to clear codes using my Autel scan tool and inputting Foton light truck with cummins ISF, it then uses J1939 to communicate with the ecm. It is ok at clearing the codes, but I haven’t gotten it to read live data yet, might have to play around some more
I've been looking at scan tools and really I'm a bit overwhelmed. I have been needing at least to test ABS stuff, but I need to look at that stuff. Really I just want my EGR code to stop coming on.
That tuner looks fun. If you have any issues let me know. Also I'd love to know if the economy is any better. I think my bearing issue, along with some tire issues caused by some steering suspension issues is causing my MPG to now be around 19.
I've been wanting to hold off on tuning and even my exhaust until I get another transmission, which keeps on getting pushed back as far as spending priorities are concerned.
Autel seems to have some good medium priced scan tools that will also do tpms systems. Are you still unplugging your MAF sensor to turn off the egr? My egr just all of the sudden started working and I will leave it alone for now. I wanted to custom tune the ecm, but not sure I want to spend 1k on it right now. I like the 369 ft lb number better for my tranny and 215 hp is pretty stout considering the rpm it comes in at
Yeah mine is just unplugged. From what I've been told that keeps most of the bad stuff from going back into the engine. Seeing the pics of the EGR removed, really makes me want to remove it. I really like an all business engine bay.
I just finished a R2.8 conversion in a 2007 Xterra manual trans. I was not great about documenting process, but I could try to recap for anyone who might be interested....JLMK
